Wow, that is small! I'd probably loose it within a week. XD Pretty sexxay though.

One of the most beautiful things from Apple yet. Maybe people will finally realize how awesome Apple Hardware and Software really is and switch over.

I've got a Black 4GB one and it is sexy.

Beautiful design but easily scratched.

I'm going to repeat what I posted at Last.fm

Read the small print...

"# Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and the number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

# 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less. Song capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; photo capacity is based on iPod nano-viewable photos transferred from iTunes"

Same problems as the last iShit - media spin and failed technology.

"W00t! I can wear it around my neck!"

Uh...Ok. I cannot believe that's one of the advertising point

So - we have a smaller version of failed technology.

Hooray.

I think I'll stay with my beautiful Zen Micro.

i got my 20 gb ipod last july, so going on more than a year with it.

i have too much music to buy a 4gb ipod for the same price as i paid for the 20gb one, even though that black one has a reeeeaaallly smooth looking design.

I also bought a 20 Gig iPod last year, and it's been a wonderful MP3 player for me. I've had no problems with it even after a few (I'm sorry to say) drops and falls from some really high places. The navigation, of all the players I've used, is my personal favorite, so iPod has me sold. The battery life, even after the use I've thrown at it, is still great and I'm not worried about the battery dying, because if it does, I'll just rip the thing apart and replace it.

As far as Nano goes, I want one due to the size, non-skipping flash memory, and the color. I'd still use my current iPod a lot, nothing beats a ton of music on a trip or something, but for everyday use on my way to and from work, I really don't need the thousands of songs I carry (at a fairly substantial cost in weight). I would also like the subtle look of a black iPod, since pulling out a white one at night in or around Roxbury can be sort of like saying 'come rob me, thugzzzzz.'

I have a fourth generation iPod that I earned from freeipods.com. I like it for its portability and ease of use, but I'm very disappointed in its battery life, equalizer (it's unusable; I had to buy better headphones just to be able to listen to the iPod), and scratchability.

As for my problems...

1. It seems most people agree that Apple overstates the battery life of the iPod. But I've never seen anything close to Apple's battery life claim of 12 hours, even when my music was 128kbps like they use when they count. I accidentally set my iPod off playing last night, and when I woke up, the battery was almost dead. It might have lasted 7 hours.

2. Apple says the iPod integrates seamlessly with iTunes. iTunes allows you to make custom equalizer presets and affix them to single songs. These do not sync with the iPod, thus it does not integrate with iTunes fully. This might not be a problem if not for the fact that Apple's extreme equalizer presets cause distortion in anything of any volume.

3. The iPod is intended to be a portable device. It's also renowned for being beautiful, and I must say it is. So why does it scratch so easily? Mine had a scratch on it before I even got it plugged in! To protect it from scratches, one must buy a case that adds to its size and/or takes away from its visual appeal. Why couldn't Apple apply some anti-scratch coating so their gorgeous design survives coming in contact with something made of cotton?

1. It's shiny.

2. See above.

If only I had the money to spend on shiny lil toys like that

BTW, an interesting (humorous or heartbreaking, depending on how you like ipods) article is here:

I just bought a shuffle and it's great. I have a regular ipod too, but I think when the nano comes out I'll get a black on. I heard they have flash memory drives instead of a real hard drive. Cool.

rush68 on September 23rd, 2005 at 10:13:26 PM

Related to the shuffle: Centrios makes a "512mb mp3 player" (not sure of it's name) that is exactly the same size as the ipod shuffle, infact the exact same design, however it has a olcd screen, fm tuner and support for more formats (as well as fm recording/voice recording/battery life is strangely longer). For the exact same price as the shuffle. I feel bad for anyone that buys a ipod shuffle now as this thing is actually a really decent mp3 player (even if it's a knock off, why just buy the shuffle to say "I OWN AN IPOD!!"). Worst part is, people say it has better over all sound reproduction. Grab one now! Before apple sues.

I still sort of want a ipodnano, but, I'm happy with my current mp3 player (tiny little samsung thing that has a crazzzzzzy battery life)

"Same problems as the last iShit - media spin and failed technology."

ALL the other portable music players use a battery and has a formatted hd, flash or other storage media, making your point moot.
