D80 vs. D40
just type
D80
or
D40
and ill tally up the votes!
Is this your first SLR? Do you already have lenses? How much previous experience do you have? What do you need to do with the camera? What is your budget? Etc etc.
Unlike Brian, I would suggest a D40 OVER the D40x, because personally I don't see a $200 difference between the cameras. D40x has more resolution... and that's it. D80 is bigger and heavier than the D40 (or D40x), but it has a steeper learning curve and likely isn't for beginners. If you're just making your first step into SLRs, I would honestly get the D40 and then spend the saved money on a decent lens (the Nikon 18-200 VR is fantastic), although there are some limited features (lack of AF motor). Personally, I love the D50, which is older than the D40 (and therefore is a bit behind in technology) but has an autofocus motor which is very important to me, especially when I use the Nikon 50/1.8 and the Tokina 12-24/4.

I'd go D80 unless you really don't care about the lack of the AF motor in-camera, then the D40x wouldn't be a bad choice. Either way I wouldn't suggest the older D40.DB on December 21st, 2007 at 1:21:56 AM
Um... well, there are several things that factor into it.Is this your first SLR? Do you already have lenses? How much previous experience do you have? What do you need to do with the camera? What is your budget? Etc etc.
