Feature Requests

Brian on December 31st, 1969 at 5:00:00 PM

I thought it would be a good idea to have a place to keep track of all feature requests. So far, the following have been requested:

- Show number of comments for images in browsing mode

- Profiles for users

- Journals

- User groups

- Browse preferences (categorization)

- Watching

- Favorites enhancement

- Show number of views for each image

- Statistics for individual users

- Forum smilies

- Forum 'BB code'

- Alternate themes

- Automatic watermarking preference

- Larger avatars (displayed in profile view only)

- Private messaging

- Central messaging system (for keeping track of PM's and comments on art)

- Print service

I'll be making replies to this topic with updates as to the status of these enhancements. Also, if you have any suggestions or requests, please feel free to either post them in this topic or to start your own topic. I may eventually make topics out of each section, ie: forums, gallery mode, community aspects.

All looks good to me. Signatures too, maybe?

WildBill on September 12th, 2005 at 12:50:22 AM

+ Quick reply on forums

+ Edit/delete (or request for deletion?) own comments, edit own posts

+ RSS feeds; updates, all users, single users

+ /Maybe/ ratings, but such might take away from the friendliness of community's atmosphere

+ More advanced viewing options for the member list; split into multiple pages if you haven't already

! Remove register link when logged in

! Remove "browse more" link when there aren't multiple gallery pages to be viewed

Good suggestions so far. I'm adding to the list something that was requested today:

- Archiving gallery images

Explaination of feature:

Basically, a lot of people, including myself, will probably want their gallery to show only what they consider their best images, but would also like to upload things that they may want to share. Because of this, we will offer an archive feature, that will be like a secondary portfolio. The images that are not archived will be displayed when a user's gallery is viewed, and the archived images will be able to be shown by selecting to see them.

I thought it sounded like a good idea, but rather than limiting it to archived and not archived, I thought I'd give users the ability to create their own folders and sort their images amongst them as they desire. This would let people create such categories as 'experimental,' for example, that would be a good place to put art that a person wants feedback on, but doesn't display the level of creative skill a person has in other mediums or styles. I plan to start coding this sometime this week.

As for RSS, Wild Bill, it is already in the works and at a type of testing phase. When it is available for use, we will syndicate updates and user galleries. Its purpose is mainly to offer users a way to show art on their personal websites, so the 'all' functionality may be very limited, say to 3, 4 or maybe 5 images (basically the newest). In addition, I'm looking at ways to syndicate comments and forum posts in a second version of the RSS feature. Once I'm satisfied with the state of the system, the feature will be available to the public.

"- Automatic watermarking preference"

Don't you think this would interfere with the general browsing experience of the site? I mean - it's for art appreciation. Not a stock photo site, or a downloads hub.

The one feature that I would love involves the merging of the users gallery and the proposed user profile.

I.E. - a user info page. Something small and simple that provides links to the users galleries and displays their profile.

Think the DeviantArt user page, but more simple.

Also, if you would like some help with themes/designs for the site - I would love to help. I design templates and themes for a living and can provide links to some of my work. I would love to do it for free - just to help spread this site.

Thanks.

drpfenderson on September 15th, 2005 at 3:29:16 AM

Another good one would be the ability to modify forum posts. ;)

Anyways, I just noticed there is no real 'breadcrumb' navigation feature for the forum. This is slightly confusing and annoying. Shouldn't be too hard to impliment.

Brian on September 15th, 2005 at 3:53:17 AM

I agree fully. The current forums are, for lack of a better description, so incomplete that I almost left them out. As for watermarking, I planned to only have it as an option for people who want to bard hi-res pictures. So from a browsing standpoint, there would be no watermarks displayed on either the thumbnails, or the gallery view. However, the full size view could, at the user's discretion, be branded if that person saw the need. I think many would not though, so it's pretty low on the list of things to do.

I think your idea for the user info page is a good one. It's a feature that I'm working on as quickly as possible in my free time, since the current favorites system (being only a list) is rather bland and underpowered.

spikeyone on September 15th, 2005 at 4:01:58 AM

I hope animated GIFs will work soon~

Scoria on September 15th, 2005 at 4:52:57 AM

Yes, they will. ;-)

drpfenderson on September 15th, 2005 at 6:21:49 AM

I see that the watermarking has been implimented. I'm sorry, but it is rather distracting. How about a copyright at the bottom of the page instead?

It would take care of the copyright issue, and wouldn't obstruct the pics.

Glad to be here for the birth of a great site. Fantastic work.

Scoria on September 15th, 2005 at 10:02:45 AM

Thank you.

Those are all noted. :-)

Kostika on September 15th, 2005 at 4:09:57 PM

I'm actually quite keen on a watermarking feature. I may post my work for appreciation, but I also sell my work for money. So someone stealing my work would be very bad.

Kostika on September 15th, 2005 at 8:39:52 PM

Another idea, put the categories for submissions in alphabetical order.

.PNG Support for Pictures [Icons].

So users can save created icons and

Keith on September 17th, 2005 at 5:23:37 AM

Prolly already in there, but I can't read. How bout a "new posts" option?

Tony on September 17th, 2005 at 8:36:45 PM

I request changing the site from beta to Alpha! the layout is still a bit raw, the colors hurt my eyes, i dunno... this seems like sheezyart but not as pollished out.

Scoria on September 17th, 2005 at 9:18:14 PM

Tony,

We're working on it! ;-)

rush68 on September 19th, 2005 at 1:13:04 AM

Moderation, not that i think every little bad thing should be deleted, but obvious pranks/jokes/etc really shouldn't be kept around. That's what makes sites like deviant art terrible to browse through, no one ever deletes anything no matter what it is. http://www.subvariance.com/?f=3&id=1117 things like this really have no place here in my opinion, but, could just be me.

I don't like elitist communitys, but some standards are nice just to keep up appearances. (Also lots of great stuff == inspiration == more people trying to do just as great).

Keith on September 19th, 2005 at 2:35:53 AM

Well about that ^ . The minute you refuse to display any type of original work, then you start accepting less and less. Nomatter what, SOMEONE will always be offended by something. So, you can either accept all, or none. Though a lot of it is pathetic and pointless, it has as much of a right to be here as anyone's work.

Brian on September 19th, 2005 at 3:15:00 AM

I'm reluctant to delete anything other than things that are outright illegal or some form of maliciousness targeted directly at an individual. I do, however, agree that many people are turned off by, what some people think, is not art in the traditional sense, but rather a form of art spam. I've been thinking about that issue a lot as I've considered what to do as the community becomes larger and therefore harder to keep an eye on. Some members have recommended that we implement a form of rating system that would cause such pieces, viewed by the overall community as non relevant, to be sort of filtered out by viewing only the highest rated images. This, in my opinion would never work. If you look at Deviant Art right now, the vast majority of art is never even seen. This means that such a system would only help to hide great art as well. In addition, any sort of rating is out of the question, as it leads to nonconstructive criticism.

My current thought on the issue is the possibility of a thumbs-down flag of some kind. Firstly, the results of which would never actually be seen which eliminates the problem of the rating. Secondly, since there is no higher point than the default, you don't run into popular art overshadowing less known works. There would have to exist some kind of weight to the system, such that staff members cause a more intense non-relevance vote than other members. This would mean that should a piece of work be so 'bad' that it requires immediate 'attention,' staff members could act, yet smaller things that are just a matter of preference could be handled freely by a democratic community. The biggest plus is that nothing is really deleted, the system would just react to the general consenses.

Still, the system isn't perfect, so I'm attempting to think of ways it can be improved. It won't be implemented until I'm fairly positive it is fair and constructive to do so. Offer your thoughts on improvements, or if I didn't make any sense in my preceeding paragraphs, i'll try to clarify.

rush68 on September 23rd, 2005 at 8:49:01 AM

Also (although i'm sure it would be implemented no matter what in the future).

An option to delete your own account if needed would be somewhat of a requirement.

Sandcastle on September 25th, 2005 at 2:11:59 PM

Perhaps a form of in-site RPG elements, with inventory (for collectible site skins, contest prizes), special stats and so on... optional for interested people. It's ambitious, but so far none of the artsites have any of these yet (save for Invisionboard art forums)!

Void on October 7th, 2005 at 9:15:15 PM

-The ability to reply to comments.

(I'd really like to be able to say "thanks!" to those that say something nice.)

-Perhaps to ability to create a 'private gallery' that would be veiwable only to selected other users, if the art is too personal.

servantofgod316 on October 10th, 2005 at 12:33:38 AM

I am just transfering here from Deviant Art. I like it a lot better here...it is easier to get around and easier to upload. Though the real reason i have transfered is because of the murders that have been connected to Deviant Art... I DEFINETLY would love it if there was a Journal here and A place to submit poetry and prose here too...i miss that from DA. Just a thought. ! :-)
